Friday Highlights | An Odd Week

As you may have noticed, I've been doing these Friday Highlight posts for a couple of weeks now with the theme of things that made me smile. Today's post will be a little different because this week has been one of those odd weeks where no major things have made me smile. It certainly hasn't been a bad week, but there's just nothing major to write about.

So things that have happened this week:

-My dad had a couple of days off work so we have done a lot of jigsaws together. Our brains work in very different ways when it comes to jigsaws so I had to bite my tongue a lot when he was trying to hand me pieces when I was concentrating on other areas of the jigsaw!

- Remember at the start of December I wrote about my eyes swelling up? The antibiotics seemed to have worked and I've had no eye problems since then. Until Tuesday night. I was in my car driving and I could feel my eye swelling up again. By Wednesday morning I looked like I'd been on the wrong end of a boxing match. I'll spare you the photos that I have. The pharmacist just recommended eye drops this time and they've done a great job in getting the swelling down so I look like a regular person again.

- I downloaded a pedometer app to my phone this week and I've set myself a goal number of steps to take every day. So far so good I'm pleased to report! It's quite difficult to keep my phone on me at work all the time to count the steps so I think I need to look into getting a Fitbit or something like that (if you have any recommendations, please let me know). After a week of monitoring my steps, I've been sleeping much better.

Party Time

I'm linking up with Joey and Kristin for this catch up post!

Over the Christmas period we took some time out to celebrate the recent engagement of my cousin Sara! They hosted a wonderful party and it was great to see so many people there to celebrate the happy news.

One of the most popular things at the party was the photobooth- I think we all had a lot of fun in there and came out with some pretty memorable photos!

I think we are going to need a photo booth at every family party now!

Weekending | Card Making and Shopping

On Saturday morning, I dug out my craft stuff from the depths of my bedroom with the task of making a Birthday card for my sister. Her birthday isn't for another few weeks but for once in my life I'm actually organised! She loves cats, so after scouring Pinterest for inspiration, this is what I came up with. Considering I haven't done much card making recently, I'm quite pleased with it.
My sister's birthday card.

In the afternoon, I went into work for a couple of hours. Saturday is usually my day off so I'm working 13 days in a row without a day off at the moment. It's a good job it's just part time hours! When I got home we ordered a Chinese takeaway for tea and I sat down and watched a little bit of NCAA Gymnastics.

I had a nice lie in on Sunday morning then went shopping with my mum to the outlets. I try to limit how many times I go there because I know I always buy myself stuff thanks to the amazing deals and it's not stuff that I actually need! I mean, how many pairs of Nike trainers does a girl really need? Sure I'll use them, but when I have 6 perfectly good pairs already, I have to resist the temptation of a 50% off sale. I did buy a few little things for my sisters birthday present (see, I really am organised) and I bought myself a new coat from Marks and Spencer. It was £69 originally, and was marked down to £34.50. When I took it to the till it was further reduced to £29.99 so I'm pretty pleased with that!

My new coat- the picture doesn't show the colour properly but its a stone grey colour.

The rest of my day wasn't quite as exciting. On the way home we dropped in to see my sister and her boyfriend then got home in time to find that my dad had cooked us lunch. Yay! I had a quiet afternoon then was at work in the evening. I finished the weekend off by watching the Broncos vs Patriots game. I quite like watching the American Football, but can't say I really understand it all. If anyone wants to give me a crash course in the rules before the Superbowl, that'd be great!

Friday Highlights | Things that made me smile this week

Two weeks in a row doing Friday highlight posts- I'm getting good!

1- We had a bit of snow at the weekend! Enough to stick but not enough to cause too much chaos so it was quite nice. It's the first time this Winter that I've actually had to defrost my car to go out in the morning so I guess I'm quite lucky

2- I live near to a good shopping centre so I rarely go shopping in my local town centre, but this week I did and I was pleasantly surprised. You can tell that the economy has got a bit better because there are actually shops and small businesses on the high street again rather than derelict buildings and charity shops.

3-  A dessert bar has opened recently and we decided to check it out. It didn't disappoint! I couldn't decide what to order so I settled for a half and half waffle- one side white chocolate and raspberry and the other side fruit salad and nutella!

4- As much as Alan Rickman's death definitely isn't a highlight, I really enjoyed the Harry Potter marathon on tv at the weekend, followed by Die Hard.

5- I've tried to be a bit more active this week- a lot more walking when I can and I've been on the exercise bike in the house every day. Hopefully I can keep it up!

What has been your highlight of the week?

2015 Highlights

I must be one of the few bloggers out there that hasn't done a 2015 in review post yet! So without any further ado, here are a few of my highlights from 2015.

January- The year started off with my 22nd birthday and lots of playing of the infamous Taylor Swift song '22'. I started working with a new competition training group at work which was a new challenge. Also in January we had a baby shower for my cousin Sophie and her little girl.

February- We enjoyed a nice day out for my sisters birthday, and then at the end of the month, Sophie gave birth to Miss Emily 8 days early so I drove over 200 miles on my day off work to go and meet her.

March- In March, I became a 'proper' gymnastics coach as my gymnasts competed in their first external gymnastics competition. Also this month, I went to Liverpool for the weekend to watch the British Gymnastics Championships which was tons of fun. I think I really got bitten by the gymnastics bug that weekend as I now want to travel to as many live gymnastics competitions as possible.

April- April started off with celebrating Easter weekend in Wales with the family. I also started my Level 2 gymnastics coaching course as a way to further my career.

May- May was spent with most weekends at my coaching course, but we did manage a weekend away to Wales for a football event and quality time with Emily while she was still tiny. I also started scrapbooking again, and had my work hours changed quite a lot.

June- June was a relatively quiet month. As the weather got warmer, we spent evenings outside around the fire with a glass of wine, and we went for walks around the local countryside. I also did a 13 hour day coaching at a gymnastics competition that had fun a little overtime and pulled out a minor technological miracle when the cd of the music for floor routines had gone missing!

July- The first weekend of July was spent in Wales for a testimonial event at the football club. At the end of the month I had a couple of days off work so I went up to Wales again for a few relaxing days (usually when we go to Wales, it's for an event of some kind rather than a relax), then the family came to visit our house for my mum's birthday. We also went to Cheshire Oaks for a shopping trip where I grabbed a few bargains.

August- I worked a week of summer camp at work, and pretty much spent my entire month at gym or doing paper work for gym in the lead up to my Level 2 coaching exam. At the end of the month, I passed my coaching exam convincingly which was a huge relief and confidence boost. I attended a really cool Mad Hatters Tea Party for a friends birthday. We spent Bank Holiday weekend in Wales for Emily's Christening.

September- Back to regular hours at work with the craziness of kids back at school. I wasn't particularly happy this month and didn't do an awful lot, but I put a lot of effort into my blog and committing to it a little more. I did spend a lovely afternoon at the park with my mum though.

October- October started off with, you guessed it, another trip to Wales for my dad's birthday. At the end of the month, me and my sister embarked on our roadtrip to Glasgow to watch the gymnastics World Championships. Considering I don't like driving and I'm not a confident driver, I was so proud of myself for driving so far. It was a great weekend of action and I'd love to go to another world championships.

November- I tried to get most of my Christmas shopping done this month, and me and my mum went on our annual Costa Christmas drink date. We had our award evening for work which was a fun night to dress up and relax.

December- December had two main themes- Christmas, and spending every weekend leading up to Christmas at a gymnastics event of some kind (and looking at the schedule, 2016 is going to be similar). Once I had finished work for Christmas, I managed three trips to Wales over the Christmas/New Year/Birthday period so spent a lot of time playing with Emily, who is at a fabulous age to play with at the moment.

So that's 2015 for me! How was 2015 for you?

Friday Highlights | 5 Things That Made Me Smile This Week

I tried to start this series of posts last year but I never really continued with it. Fingers crossed that second time round it works! Here are 5 things that made me happy this week.

1- My mum is a teacher and I volunteered to go on a school trip with her year 2 year group. We went ice skating with 70 6 and 7 year olds! I'm not sure if we were brave or just silly! Thankfully, all the children enjoyed themselves and returned back to school with nothing more than bruises. The same can't be said for all the teachers, as one ended up in hospital with a broken knee cap. Ouch! I am proud to report that I managed to stay on my feet for the entire time, but I was absolutely exhausted at the end of the day (I had to go and work my usual evening job afterwards).

2- Speaking of my job, no matter what mood I'm in, there is always someone who can put a smile on my face each day (and there's always someone that can make me annoyed). I guess that's what you get when you work with kids! Whether it's achieving a new skill, showing determination to master skills and make corrections, being polite or just saying something funny, my gymnasts can always put a smile on my face and amaze me.

3- I realised I was spending too much time looking at screens so I found out an old jigsaw and completed it on Monday. It was fun to do something different and spend a couple of hours away from the internet and technology.

4- Searching for a holiday! 2015 was the first time since 2000 that I didn't go abroad so I'm desperate to go on a holiday this year. I'm not to sure where we are going to go, so if you have any recommendations for relaxing European holidays in September, let me know! I love the look of Santorini but its so expensive, and I'm currently liking what I see of Madeira.

5- I was brave enough to go on the scales and weigh myself and was delighted to see that I actually lost weight over Christmas! I'm really not sure how as I ate horribly and I did very little exercise. Hopefully I can continue with getting healthier as the exercise bike and cross trainer are back in the house after a temporary stay in the shed to make space for the Christmas Tree.

What made you smile this week?

New Year Catch Up

This is going to be a mish mash post to get up to date with all the happenings of the New Year so far!

-New Years Eve was lovely. I went out for a meal at lunchtime at a new American Smokehouse restaurant that has just opened nearby for a catch up with an old school friend. It was lovely to see her and I'm determined to see her more than twice this year- even if she is currently living 100 miles away and studying for a PhD. In the evening, my auntie and uncle came to visit and we had a lovely evening together eating Indian food and drinking champagne.

-2nd January was my birthday. I opened my presents the night before, then on my birthday morning me and my dad travelled to Wales to watch a football match. Unfortunately our team lost, but my day was made by getting to spend the evening with my cousins and playing with my favourite little girl, Emily.

-Speaking of my birthday, my mum made my cake this year. I found the idea on pinterest and she did and amazing job putting it altogether.

-I've been back at work for just over a week now and despite quite a few changes, it feels like I was never away. I'm already covered in bruises again from carrying heavy equipment!

- This weekend, we went out for a meal with my grandparents and family to celebrate my birthday, albeit a week late. My mum even made a second birthday cake for me! Which is your favourite?

7th Heaven Giveaway Win!

For once in my life, I've actually won something! Back in November I entered a giveaway on the Life In a Breakdown Blog, and I must admit that I'd completely forgotten about it. Then on a cold Monday morning just before Christmas Sarah got in contact to say I'd won!

The products arrived this morning and I can't wait to use them. The box they came in was so pretty, and the products include face masks, hair masks and foot masks in a variety of fruity flavours. I've never used 7th Heaven masks before, but they look so good and my skin can't wait to get some TLC after having a pretty unhealthy Christmas.

Have you ever used these products?
